Penumbra

In astronomy, penumbra describes the softened edge of a shadow—the place where darkness gradually yields to light. Neither fully illuminated nor completely obscured, it is a place of quiet transition.

Inspired by this interplay, Penumbra explores the relationship between openness and opacity, light and shadow, black and ivory. Eight handwoven weaves transform natural fibers into layered compositions that soften daylight and reveal depth. Crafted by skilled artisans, each weave celebrates the beauty found between extremes, where light becomes texture, shadow becomes form, and craftsmanship brings both into harmony.

AURA, Weave No. 2365
Pairing ramie with chenille yarn, Aura surrounds finely woven structure with sculptural bands of soft fringe. Layered texture catches daylight, casting shadows for a tactile, ethereal effect.

LUSTRA, Weave No. 2367
Woven of ramie and finished with a border of soft chenille, Lustra filters natural light with exceptional delicacy. Balancing refined simplicity with expressive detail, it offers a graceful transition between light and shadow.

STRIA, Weave No. 2369
Fine horizontal threads of ramie and abaca reveal linear traces of light and shade, lending subtle dimension across the weave. Defined by precision and restraint, Stria celebrates the beauty of meticulous craftsmanship.

VEIL, Weave No. 2371
Interweaving handspun cotton, ramie and abaca, Veil creates an airy openness that softly diffuses daylight while preserving clarity. Its layered structure gently blurs the boundary between interior and exterior.

CADENCE, Weave No. 2373
Handwoven of wood pulp fiber, Cadence echoes a measured rhythm as black and white warp threads alternate across the weave to create a bold interplay. Calm and refined, it finds beauty in contrasts.

SILHOUETTE, Weave No. 2375
Pairing handspun cotton and abaca, Silhouette presents a woven composition that changes with the movement of the sun. As light shifts, it reveals remarkable relief through the subtle irregularities of handcrafted natural fibers.

UMBRA, Weave No. 2377
Woven of black ramie, Umbra achieves a bold presence through simplicity alone. Its finely textured surface absorbs the light, uncovering rich tonal depth and understated elegance.

OBSCURA, Weave No. 2379
Bands of abaca and chenille drift across an open weave, creating striking layers of opacity and transparency. As daylight changes, new layers of contrast emerge, highlighting the expressive character of the artisan’s hand.
