Long before green was “green”, Conrad was a pioneer in sustainable design, handweaving custom roman fold shades from renewable natural fibers. For over fifty years now we have continued this time-honored tradition of craftsmanship.

Green Matters

Though the art of what we create at Conrad is intricate, our materials are simple. We handweave from plants and grasses that are sustainably grown and harvested. The utilization of traditional hand-looms for weaving our natural fiber products means there is very little energy consumption or waste in our production process. And we support a cottage industry of farmers and local artisans in several countries as part of what we do.

We’re all hearing a lot today about “rapidly renewable” products, but what exactly does this mean? LEED's standard (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, the predominate benchmarking system for green building) is any material that can be harvested within a 10-year cycle or shorter. Most of the natural fibers found in Conrad handwoven shades renew in just a matter of months. Vetiver, a fiber used in several of our weaves, is so vigorous and easy to establish, that it’s used in over 50 countries across the world to prevent soil erosion and to aid in land restoration. Vetiver, arrowroot, hemp and bamboo are just a few of the many rapidly renewable natural fibers used in Conrad shade designs. Conrad offers a selection of over one hundred window coverings.

Besides being good for the environment, natural fibers have several advantages on the window. Many, such as natural flax and hemp, are quite strong and durable with high abrasion resistance. Flax and hemp also have a high natural resistance to ultraviolet exposure. Some natural fibers have anti-mildew and microbial properties, making them highly resistant to mold and bacteria. Natural fibers, particularly smooth-surfaced fibers like flax, can also help to inhibit static electricity (less dust), making them excellent as a material for windows. The natural wax content of flax and other fibers also offers a beautiful sheen that adds to the beauty of the product.

Aside from the utilization of sustainable natural materials, there are many other aspects to what makes a window covering green. Is the product safe without harmful toxins? (yes) Does the product preserve and enhance local economies? (yes) Does it utilize the natural solar power of sunlight, providing views while reducing heat gain and maintaining daylighting levels? (yes) Are there minimal or no VOC’s (volatile organic compounds)? (yes) Does the product withstand light and heat exposure and have a long life cycle? (yes) Does it require very little care and maintenance? (yes) There are few products as environmentally-friendly as Conrad.

Green matters---we know because it has been the heart of our business for over a half century. It is one of many reasons designers across the world specify Conrad.
